Background: Artist Xu Bing was appointed as the "Ambassador for Cultural Promotion" in March 2024. His inaugural art project in Hong Kong, titled "Xu Bing: Square Word Calligraphy Classroom" (tentative title), will be showcased at the Hong Kong Museum of Art from March to July 2025.

"Square Word Calligraphy" is a unique writing style created by Xu Bing, blending Chinese calligraphy with English letters to form a "new language" that transcends cultural differences.

The exhibition aims to engage the public in a classroom setting by allowing them to personally participate in and experience this writing system, which merges Chinese and Western cultures, through the production of copybooks featuring characteristics of Hong Kong’s culture.


Details:

-         To introduce visitors to the exhibition and address their inquiries

-         To encourage and assist visitors in participating in calligraphy activities and tablet-based creations

-         To ensure that exhibit displays and interactive equipment are well maintained

-         To regularly organise, refill, and replace educational materials related to the exhibition

Date: 29 March 2025 to 29 June 2025 (Every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays)


Time:  9:45 am – 1:15 pm; and 2:15pm – 5:45 pm
(Two sessions each day, with each session lasting 3.5 hours; please choose to serve in both the morning and afternoon sessions, or only in the afternoon session.)

Location: The Wing (Lower) at Hong Kong Museum of Art (10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui)

No. of volunteers required: 1 person for each session

Requirement: 

-         Fluent in spoken Cantonese and able to communicate with visitors in simple Putonghua and English

-         Polite and has good interpersonal and communication skills as well as good customer service manner

-         Form 5 or above

-         Priority will be given for those who have experience in leading guided tours

Briefing

All successful applicants are required to attend the briefing session to learn more about the service details.

Time: 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Details: Staff from the Art Promotion Office will introduce the background of the exhibition and details of the requested service. Briefing notes will be provided to the volunteers.

Registration: Please submit the completed online registration form by 12:00 nn on 27 January 2025 (Monday).

Notes: If the number of applications received exceeds the quota, the MVS Secretariat will draw lots to select the participants. The successful applicants will be notified of the result by e-mail on or before 6​ March 2025 (Thursday).  The unsuccessful applicants will also be notified by email separately. Activities are subject to change, please refer to the Secretariat’s announcements as final.
