Background: Artist Xu Bing was appointed as the "Ambassador for Cultural Promotion" in 2024. The exhibition "Xu Bing in Hong Kong: Eying East, Wondering West — Square Word Calligraphy Classroom" is one of the highlights of this commissioned project and is currently on display at the Hong Kong Museum of Art from March to July 2025.

Square Word Calligraphy is a form of writing Xu Bing began developing in 1993, in which English is written to resemble Chinese characters. This exhibition invites the audience to explore Square Word Calligraphy from three perspectives: "Appreciation", "Learning" and "Application". It not only brings an immersive classroom setting to Hong Kong, but also infuses it with the region's linguistic culture, further enriching the meaning and interpretation of Square Word Calligraphy. Xu Bing hopes to prompt people into a new cognitive perspective, altering their inherent ways of thinking through this work.
